Obesity is a condition commonly associated with excess amount of fat in your body. It is also a condition where Body Mass Index (BMI) is 30 or greater. Obesity is often linked with several health problems such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes, and many others. Considering the effect of obesity, to know the prevention of obesity is a necessity. Through this way, it is expected the number of people with obesity can be reduced.

Prevention of Obesity on Children and Adults

To prevent obesity, it is important to firstly know the causes of obesity. This condition is mostly caused by consuming more calories than the amount that your body can burn into energy. The calories are then stored as fat under your skin tissue. It eventually creates fat buildup and if it happens in long time, it will cause obesity. Besides, there are also some influencing factors such as genetics, metabolic, and lifestyle. Those factors trigger obesity either in children or adults.

Prevention of obesity can be done in several ways. Infants, children, and adults need different treatment when it comes to obesity prevention. Here are some things that you can do to prevent obesity:

1. Obesity prevention in infants

The fact that obesity can occur in anyone makes parents need to be aware of their infants. Prevention of obesity in infants can be done by prolonging the breastfeeding period. A study shows that the longer infants are breastfed, the less chance they have obesity when they grow up. For babies who receive breastfeeding for 6 months or longer, the percentage of having overweight decreases to 40 percent.

2. Obesity prevention in children

More and more children are diagnosed with obesity because they do not have sufficient physical activity. Combined with poor eating habits and gadget addiction, it just gets worse. Not to mention genetics also take part in causing obesity in children. Prevention of obesity in children can be done through several ways, such as changing eating habits. Parents should also encourage children to move and do physical activities.

Reducing time in front of gadget, TV or computer is also effective to avoid obesity. Let them spend at least an hour doing outdoor activity to burn more calories and produce sweat. Eliminate preservatives and sweetener from their diet to reduce the potential of obesity in children. Encourage them to eat more fruits and vegetables for healthier life.

3. Obesity prevention in adults

The strategies of preventing obesity in adults are likely the same as what you can do in children. Aside from maintaining your diet, you should spend more time for physical activities either indoor or outdoor. Eat at least 5 to 6 servings of veggies and fruits every day. Bring out canned drinks and junk food from your fridge and start to load with healthy diet.

Those are some strategies that you can do related to prevention of obesity. It is important to be aware of obesity because it can be a silent killer among your family. Start from yourself, start from now.
